Taking the lead: embracing a cleaner mobility
The Future is Electric
Volvo Cars is taking a bold lead with electrification in the auto industry. As the first major premium car brand to commit to a hybrid or full-electric powertrain for all our models, we aim to drive the automotive sector forward, improve the quality of the air in our cities and increase our success as a business.
50% of Volvo Cars’ sales volume to be fully electric by 2025.
Volvo Cars has committed to putting one million electrified cars on the road by 2025.
Every new Volvo car launched from 2019 onwards will have an electric motor. This ambitious commitment shows that at Volvo Cars we dare to take the lead and embrace a cleaner mobility. It underlines our aim to reduce the environmental impact of our products, and to improve air quality in our cities. Most of all, it shows that we listen to our customers and their needs.
This year, we take the next step towards electrifying our range. We are upgrading our existing T8 and T6 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid powertrains with improved batteries, and plug-in options will now be available on every model we build. We will also introduce a range of mild hybrids based on kinetic energy recovery technology starting this year, encompassing both diesel and petrol-engined cars.
« We are determined to be the first premium car maker to move our entire portfolio of vehicles into electrification. This is a clear commitment towards reducing our carbon footprint, as well as contributing to better air quality in our cities. »
Volvo Cars will introduce a range of electrified cars over the coming years, and there’ll be something for everyone. The choices will include plug-in hybrid models that build on the success of Volvo Cars’ existing Twin Engine technology, as well as new mild-hybrid models.
The mild hybrid configuration represents a step on the road towards full electrification. It will deliver a better every day driving experience while reducing fuel consumption and emissions by up to 15 per cent.
Our first fully electric car will be presented later this year and it will be followed by a range of electric cars in the coming years. These cars will be Volvo models as well as high-performance models from Polestar, Volvo Cars’ performance brand.
Taken together this means that, in future, there will be no Volvo cars without an electric motor. And to make sure we have plenty of batteries to power all those electrified Volvos, we recently signed large supply deals with LG Chem and CATL, two of the world’s leading lithium-ion battery makers.
Leading in hybrid technology
Volvo Cars is already a leader in hybrid technology. Today, our Twin Engine models use plug-in hybrid powertrains that combine effortless performance with a drive mode to suit every need. They are the most powerful yet most fuel-efficient cars in our portfolio, and offer an electric-only range that allows many drivers to commute with zero emissions.
The latest generation of cars has been designed from the outset for electrification because we put people first, and Volvo Cars’ designers and engineers understand that customers want a better, more efficient form of mobility. Electrification will play a major role in helping us to reduce CO2 emissions and air pollution, improving life for current and future generations.
