Taking the lead: embracing a cleaner mobility

The Future is Electric

Volvo Cars is taking a bold lead with electrification in the auto industry. As the first major premium car brand to commit to a hybrid or full-electric powertrain for all our models, we will drive the automotive sector forward, improve the quality of the air in our cities and increase our success as a business.

2025

50% of Volvo Cars’ sales volume to be fully electric by 2025.

1 million

Volvo Cars has committed to putting one million electrified cars on the road by 2025.

Every new Volvo car launched from 2019 onwards will have an electric motor. This ambitious announcement shows that at Volvo Cars we dare to take the lead and embrace a cleaner mobility. It underlines our commitment to reducing the environmental impact of our products, and to improving air quality in our cities. And, most of all, it shows that we listen to our customers and their needs.

« We are determined to be the first premium car maker to move our entire portfolio of vehicles into electrification. This is a clear commitment towards reducing our carbon footprint, as well as contributing to better air quality in our cities. »

Electrified alternatives

Volvo Cars will introduce a range of electrified cars over the coming years, and there’ll be something for everyone. The choices will include plug-in hybrid models that build on the success of Volvo Cars’ existing Twin Engine technology. There will also be new mild-hybrid models that provide zero-emissions electric power when the internal combustion engine is least efficient.

The mild hybrid configuration represents a move towards full electrification, It will deliver a better every day driving experience while reducing fuel consumption and emissions. Our first fully electric car will be presented during 2019 and it will be followed by a range of electric cars in the coming years. These cars will be Volvo models as well as high-performance models from Polestar, Volvo Cars’ performance brand. It means that, in future, there will be no Volvo cars without an electric motor.

Volvo Cars Electrification

Leading in hybrid technology

Volvo Cars is already a leader in hybrid technology. Today, Twin Engine models use plug-in hybrid powertrains that combine effortless performance with a drive mode to suit every need. They are the most powerful yet most fuel-efficient cars, and they offer an electric-only range that allows many drivers to commute with zero emissions.

The latest generation of cars has been designed from the outset for electrification because we put people first, and Volvo Cars’ designers and engineers understand that customers want a better, more efficient form of mobility. Electrification will play a major role in helping us to reduce CO2 emissions and air pollution, improving life for current and future generations.

Henrik Green, senior vice president, Research and Development, Volvo Car Group, says: “The time for electrification has finally come. The technology has matured and our customers are ready.” We think electrification represents a bright future for mobility and for Volvo Cars.
