Pride at Pride

Volvo Cars employees celebrate Euro Pride in Gothenburg
Hundreds of Volvo Cars employees grabbed their rainbow flags and took to the streets of Gothenburg to celebrate EuroPride this weekend. The sea of people decked out in rainbow colours stood out against the grey Gothenburg sky. Hundreds of Volvo Cars employees had gathered to celebrate diversity and authenticity at the EuroPride Parade, and they weren’t about to let anything rain on their parade.

In fact, there were so many people who wanted to show support that the pre-parade gathering had to be moved outdoors to accommodate everyone.

Milla Johansson, EMC Attribute Leader and one of the spokespeople for LGBTQ+ rights at the Pride events, welcomed Volvo Cars employees with a huge rainbow flag, and our volunteers gave out bright orange t-shirts, rainbow flags and lanyards. Volvo Cars employees’ families joined in the festivities. The daughters of Javier Varela, Senior Vice President Manufacturing and Logistics, gave everyone bright rainbow face paint, while Vice President Product and Offer, Launch and Pricing Management EMEA Anders H Gustavsson signed the Pride in People banner alongside with them.

Once everyone was suitably colourful, the team joined the throngs of people waiting for their turn to set off in the parade.

“We haven’t even started the parade yet, and I’m so proud!” said Ödgärd Andersson, Vice President Vehicle Software and Electrics.

Milla Johansson was similarly proud of her colleagues.

“To see people opening their minds, standing up and publicly showing their support for this cause gives me such hope.”

Soon it was time to join the parade, and the Volvo Cars group set off through the streets of Gothenburg, led by a gleaming blue XC40, flying Pride flags and pumping music that had everyone around it dancing. The parade continued even through the rain, led by our super-energetic Culture and Diversity team, which organised the event.

Katarina Matson, Senior Expert Culture and Diversity, smiled from ear to ear for the entire parade:

“This truly is one of my proudest moments of all time at work. Really, it’s just amazing. The number of people who came, the engagement, the celebration, it’s fantastic. And seeing the banner signed by so many people, all pledging their support – that gave me goosebumps.”

We are delighted to see so many people celebrating our belief that at Volvo Cars, every person should be able to be their true, authentic selves.
