Meet our new head of exterior design: T. Jon Mayer

He already was responsible for designing stylish models like the Volvo S60 and V60. Now T. Jon Mayer is our new head of exterior design.

If you're a fan of how our Volvo S60 and V60 look, you're also a fan of T. Jon Mayer. After all, he was the lead exterior designer for those two swanky Volvo models – and then some. Earlier in his Volvo career, he also designed the three concept cars that first showcased our clean Scandinavian design language that has won so many awards in recent years.

Small surprise then that T. Jon has now been officially named our head of exterior design, effective as of May 1. Our American star designer succeeds Maximilian Missoni, who will now fully focus on his role as head of design at our strategic affiliate Polestar.

As demonstrated by those 2013 concept cars and our low 60 Series models, T. Jon has been instrumental in the development of our design language over the past decade. Apart from showing our new design language, the concept cars also demonstrated the possibilities with our SPA platform – the same platform that underpins the S60 and V60.

Most recently he was head of design at the Volvo Design & Concept Center in Camarillo, California. Our Camarillo studio has grown considerably under his leadership and increased its role within our global design operations, by developing and advancing strategic and production design ideas from a uniquely US perspective.

"I am very pleased to welcome T. Jon as our new head of exterior design," said Robin Page, our head of design. "His track record as an exterior designer speaks for itself and I am convinced he is the right person to lead us into a fully electric future."

Earlier this year, we announced our ambition of selling only fully electric cars by 2030. It will reveal a whole family of new, pure electric cars in the coming years.

"I am extremely excited for the future of exterior design at Volvo Cars," T. Jon says. "We have one of the most talented teams of exterior designers in the world and I will rely heavily on the team to create a new vision for our electrified future. Electrification presents plenty of challenges for exterior design but also an open world of opportunities. I look forward to setting the exterior design direction for the road ahead."

T. Jon came to Volvo Cars in 2011, joining the exterior design team in Gothenburg, Sweden. Before that, he graduated with honours from Carnegie Mellon University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Industrial Design and a Minor in Business Administration. He then attended the Art Center College of Design and graduated with honours with a Bachelor of Science in Transportation Design.
